About The Weepingtower

  • The Weepingtower: The oldest tower in Amsterdam

The Schreierstoren is one of the oldest and most recognizable towers in Amsterdam's city center. Situated on the banks of the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, the tower is a remnant of Amsterdam's medieval city defenses. Although its function has changed over the centuries, the Schreierstoren remains an important symbolic and historical landmark in the city.

  • Origin as a City Wall

The Schreierstoren (Screeers' Tower) was originally built in 1487 as part of Amsterdam's city walls. The city was then in full bloom, and to protect itself from potential external attacks, a defensive line was constructed, consisting of towers, ramparts, and moats. The tower was part of the fortifications on the west side of the city and served as a watchtower and gate tower.

The name "Schreierstoren" likely refers to the fact that wives of departing sailors often waited here to say goodbye to their husbands. The word "schreien" (crying) refers to crying or wailing, and it is therefore likely that this tower was often the scene of emotional farewells. This sad and poetic element gives the tower an additional historical dimension.

  • Historic & Authentic Café

The Schreierstoren is now one of the few remaining remnants of the old city walls and offers a glimpse into Amsterdam of long ago, when the city was still fully protected by walls and towers. The tower is therefore not only a historical landmark, but also a place where stories of love, loss, and hope live on—a vibrant symbol of Amsterdam's past as a port city, brimming with trade, adventure, and the sea.
